Moles Around Your Castle?

Yes, even Medieval European kings had moles. Once they built their castles and perfected the grounds, then came the moles!  So, they established the molecatcher to the king - a title, and a job, that still exists today.  The palace in Versailles, France still employs a molecatcher but I’m not sure who catches the English royalty’s moles.

In America, some archeologists believe that Native Americans used clay pots buried in the ground to eradicate moles.  Some tribes feared that a mole burrowing near their home meant death or sickness.  Other tribes felt the mole meant good health and good hunting.

Early pioneers often killed moles for their fur.  The pelts were sold and used for articles of clothing at that time, especially in Europe.  For a time, American mole pelts were preferred.
